Why Costa Rica is One of the Best Family Vacations (and Why We’ll Recommend It Over Mexico or the Caribbean)

If you’ve ever found yourself defaulting to Mexico or the Caribbean for a family vacation, you’re not alone. They’re easy. Familiar. Reliable.

But if you’re looking for something that actually feels like a vacation your family will remember years from now, Costa Rica is in a completely different category. After planning trips here for our guests and recently experiencing it with my own family, I can confidently say this: Costa Rica is one of the best family travel destinations in the world and most people are massively underestimating it. Let me show you why.

Why Choose a Costa Rica Family Vacation

When families ask, “Is Costa Rica good for kids?” the answer is almost always "yes," but not for the reasons people expect.

Costa Rica isn’t about sitting at a resort all day.

It’s about doing things together.

Think:

  • Walking across hanging bridges in the rainforest

  • Spotting sloths, monkeys, and toucans in the wild

  • Swimming at the base of a waterfall after hiking through the jungle

  • Ziplining through the canopy

  • Ending your day in natural hot springs

This is the kind of trip where kids are engaged, parents are impressed, and no one is asking for an iPad.

And unlike many “adventure” destinations, Costa Rica makes it easy:

  • Well-developed tourism infrastructure

  • Short travel distances (when planned correctly)

  • Incredible guides and experiences

  • High-end accommodations that still feel connected to nature

Our Family’s Costa Rica Itinerary (And Why It Worked So Well)

For my 40th birthday, we did what I recommend to almost every client:

A split stay between the jungle and the beach.

This is the key to doing Costa Rica right.

Stop 1: Arenal (The Jungle Experience)

We started in Arenal, staying at Nayara Tented Camp, which is exactly the kind of place that makes you feel like you’re in the middle of the rainforest without giving up comfort. This property comes with a luxury price tag, but it is completely worth it. The service was incredible, onsite restaurants wonderful, and you can't beat a private plunge pool. My daughter loved how a golf cart would come to pick us up to get around the property!

From the itinerary: we flew into Liberia and transferred straight to Arenal, settling into the jungle before diving into activities. Yes, it's a long drive, but with a private transfer and some well planned games, it flew by.

And then… we went all in....

One day alone included:

  • Hanging bridges walk high above the forest floor

  • Hiking near Arenal Volcano

  • Swimming at La Fortuna Waterfall (yes, the 500 steps are worth it)

  • Ending in natural hot springs

Another highlight? A guided sloth tour where we saw multiple sloths, plus toucans, frogs, and monkeys.

This is what Costa Rica does better than almost anywhere else: It turns nature into something immersive, accessible, and genuinely exciting for families.

And we still had downtime. Morning yoga, relaxed dinners, time to actually enjoy the hotel.

Why Arenal Works So Well for Families

Arenal is the sweet spot of:

  • Adventure without extreme difficulty

  • Wildlife that’s actually easy to see

  • Activities that work for a wide age range

  • Luxury hotels that feel like an experience, not just a place to sleep

It’s active, but not exhausting. Structured, but not rigid.

Stop 2: Papagayo Peninsula (The Beach Reset)

After a few days in the jungle, we transitioned to the coast with a private transfer to Papagayo

This is where the trip shifts from “adventure mode” to “vacation mode.”

We checked into Andaz Peninsula Papagayo, which gave us:

  • Beach access

  • Pools and family-friendly amenities

  • Easy access to nearby luxury resorts

From there, the days were a mix of:

  • Beach club time

  • Resort hopping (including a dinner at Four Seasons)

  • A volcano and waterfall excursion at Rincon de la Vieja

  • Ziplining through the jungle, our 8 year old's highlight!

And yes, we still kept it fun with things like a family photoshoot and a mix of casual and elevated dining.

Why the Beach Portion Matters

This is where most DIY travelers get it wrong.

They either:

  • Stay in one place the entire time

    or

  • Try to do too many destinations

The jungle + beach combination gives you:

  • Variety without overwhelm

  • Built-in pacing

  • A natural rhythm to the trip

Costa Rica vs Mexico or the Caribbean

Let’s address the elephant in the room.

If you’re choosing between Costa Rica and a typical resort destination, here’s the difference:

Mexico / Caribbean

  • Easier to plan on your own

  • More all-inclusive options

  • Great for pure relaxation

Costa Rica

  • More immersive and experience-driven

  • Better for families who want to do things

  • Stronger “wow” factor for kids

  • Feels more unique and memorable

Costa Rica is not a “sit at the pool all day” destination.

It’s a “we’ll be talking about this trip for years” destination.

Why Planning Costa Rica is More Complicated Than It Looks

Here’s the part most people don’t realize:

Costa Rica is not a plug-and-play destination.

There are a lot of moving parts:

  • Choosing the right airport (this matters more than you think)

  • Structuring travel days to avoid long, exhausting drives

  • Pairing the right regions together

  • Booking the right guides (this can make or break your experience)

  • Understanding which hotels are actually worth it

Even small mistakes can impact the flow of the trip.

Why Working With a Travel Advisor Makes a Huge Difference

Costa Rica is one of the destinations where having a travel advisor isn’t just helpful, it’s a completely different experience.

This is where our “production team” approach really comes into play.

We’re not just booking hotels.... We’re:

  • Designing the pacing of the trip

  • Matching activities to your family’s energy level

  • Coordinating private transportation

  • Vetting guides and experiences

  • Making sure every piece fits together seamlessly

Because the goal isn’t just to “go to Costa Rica.”

It’s to experience it in a way that feels elevated, easy, and actually enjoyable while you’re in it.

Final Thoughts: Is Costa Rica Worth It for Families?

If you want:

  • A trip that balances adventure and relaxation

  • Experiences your kids will actually remember

  • Something that feels different from your typical beach vacation

Costa Rica is one of the best choices you can make.

And when it’s planned well, it doesn’t feel complicated.

It just feels like you showed up to a really, really good production.
